Exploring Creative Writing with Your Child

Creative writing isn’t just a skill needed for English, it’s needed throughout school and all aspects of life. Your child will need to learn to communicate themselves through words and how to do so effectively. If you’re looking for ways to help your child improve on their writing skills, you’re in the right place. Here are some teacher recommended activities that were shared with us by a London private school.

Think About What Fascinates Them

The best way to get your child to engage in any sort of learning activity is to make it relevant to them. Think about what they like and enjoy doing in their free time. If that’s watching cartoons, think about whether there’s a related writing task you can set. You may for example write a letter together to their favourite on screen character.

Story Writing

To follow on from the point above, you can get your child to write the sequel to a movie, or their favourite show. It will get their creative juices flowing and them thinking about how to communicate their cool and crazy ideas through words.

A Letter to Their Headmaster

From their breaks to the actual learning that they do at school, there are probably lots of ideas that your child would like to share with their headmaster. As a writing task you can ask them to write a letter encapsulating all their ideas and how they would go about implementing them.

Letter to Santa

Their annual letter to Santa is another way that you can get your child to practise their creative writing. They will need to detail what they want and why they deserve to receive their presents.

Journaling

Children can get in the habit of writing daily by keeping a journal. They can document their thoughts, feelings, and their day.
