Back-to-school blues – they’re a very real thing for many children. After a long, carefree summer break, it can be particularly hard for children to face the routine of school once more. This feeling isn’t something that only teenagers suffer from – even younger children can feel down as the end of the holidays approaches.
Helping your child readjust isn’t too difficult though. One of the most important aspects of realigning their focus is preparation.
Preparation for a new term
It’s important that preparation begins a little before the holidays end. Younger children will benefit from a simple calendar which illustrates the passing days around a fortnight before school begins. For older children, a reminder is sufficient. Let them know what needs to be done in preparation and what responsibilities they themselves have. For some, this helps because it gives some sense of control.
Even smaller children can undertake some preparations themselves. Choosing a new school bag for example – or a new lunchbox. If you need to shop for new uniforms and shoes, try to make this a fun expedition. Don’t attempt to do it all in one trip either! Too much stress will add to the feeling of trepidation. Set aside one day for shoe shopping and one day for uniform. Take your child for a treat on the same day if possible – positive experiences will dampen any feelings of dread.

Talk to your child
Discuss what it is that they’re worried about. Are they concerned they’re behind in a particular subject? Maybe they’re worried about friendships. If you know what’s bothering them, then you’re halfway to working things out.
Make an action plan
Let your child know that whatever aspects of school are worrying them, there are solutions! For subjects they’re struggling with, a tutor might help. Or even some extra books on the subject.
